Pledges Made 8

Why Pledge

Pledging works. It really does but don't just take our word for it.

Forbes Neuroscience Explains Why You Need To Write Down Your Goals If You Actually Want To Achieve Them (forbes.com) 'if you want to achive a goal write it down'.

Dominican University of California Study focuses on strategies for achieving goals, resolutions (dominican.edu) '42% more likley to achieve your goals just by writing them down'.

York St John University Pledge for 30 - YSJActive (yorksj.ac.uk)  'Research shows that making a written commitment to a behaviour change, such as a pledge, can increase your chance of succeeding'

Clearly documenting what you want to achieve (your pledge) works but pledging is more than that. Sharing your pledge is very powerful.

Why NYE Resolutions Fail and Pledges Don't.

Every new year millions of people make new year's resolutions to change their lives. Over 90% of these will fail. Most within a few weeks, but why?

Often, the resolutions are too big. Not thought through, without any plan for success. The desire to change is linked to the euphoria of the new year itself. As new year fades so does the resolution.

'Lose weight and get fit' sound familiar?  Don't beat yourself up though. New Years Resolutions don't work for most people.

So why is making a Pledge different and far more likely to achieve results?

Pledging works because:

  • You control when you make the Pledge.  When you are ready. When you are equipped and committed to making it work.
  • Pledges are thought out, clear and specific with achievable goals. As part of the pledge process, you will show how you will succeed.  It's vital you understand how to complete the pledge, what's needed and the commitment required to reach success.  Be specific and realistic, for example walking XX steps each day is far more measurable and achievable than simply 'get fit'.
  • A pledge will be shared for people to support and help you.  Shared for people around you to understand what you are achieving and your commitment to success.
  • Making a pledge should not be undertaken lightly nor undertaken without a firm commitment to success. There is no point setting yourself up to fail.

If you have all this in place, you’re giving yourself the best possible chance of success.  If you need more steps (Pledges) to your goal then do it. You'll get there and being able to achieve success will give you that confidence that change is possible.

Why Sharing Your Pledge Works.

Sharing your pledge is a powerful and enpowering thing to do.

Reasons to share your pledge.

  • Your more likely to achieve your goals with support.
  • By sharing your pledge you are saying I'm going to do this and you can help and support me.
  • People around you are aware of what you trying to achieve.  They can be mindful not to put obstacles, traps or temptation in your path to success.
  • Others can join you. You are not alone. Even if that person is the other side of the world.
  • Your pledge can encourage others. Pledging is a shared experience.

Most importantly, once you achieve your goals and complete your pledge you will be showered with presents and praise, and who doesn't love that.
